Manual Handling Injuries
Lifting and carrying loads at work used to be a major cause of sickness and claims for personal injury but following the Manual Handling Operations Regulations 1992 the incidence has reduced dramatically due to better work practices and training. Nevertheless, cases do still occur where employees who are injured claim from their employers for their injury. RSI (repetitive strain injury) can be caused by manual handling if the movement and posture is awkward and frequent, even with a light load.
Noise Induced Hearing Loss
High levels of noise at discos can lead to hearing loss as well as at work. If your ears are ringing after being in a noisy environment then be aware that your hearing is at risk. Going deaf is no joke, especially if you enjoy music. If caused through your work, then you may have a claim agaist your employer, but that will not help your hearing. Employers are advised to ensure that the provisions of the Control of Noise at Work Regulations 2005 are adhered to.
Asbestos Diseases
Diagnosis of Asbestos diseases such as mesothelioma, asbestosis, pleural plaques, pleural thickening and other conditions which can be associated with asbestos such as pulmonary fibrosis and lung cancer is on the increase from exposure up to 50 years ago. Almost all are caused by employers' work practices when they ought to have known better. Even children and teachers have been fatally injured by asbestos in schools affecting them and also wives washing their husbands' overalls.
Two cases have recently been decided by the Supreme Court in London and the outcome is important, in particular with respect to mesothelioma claims. Ken gave evidence in the Sienkiewicz (Costello) case. The decision will make it clear that even with low levels of asbestos dust, mesothelioma is a disease which can be contracted and employers can be held liable. See web: www.supremecourt.gov.uk

Vibration White Finger - Hand Arm Vibration Syndrome HAVS
Workers still suffer from hand arm vibration syndrome (VWF) (HAVS) from using vibratory tools too frequently or for long periods. Using a strimmer, chainsaw, jack hammer or hammer drill can be harmful but did you know that some childrens' toys are even more harmful if handled for long enough?
Accupational Asthma
Despite a multitude of regulations - including COSHH, workers still contract occupational asthma due to exposure to sensitising substances. Are you protected at work from them by fume cupboard or at least local extract ventilation or as a last resort by respiratory equipment?
